Inside the tropical greenhouse a kumquat tree is growing. This tree produced fruit. I personally had never had a kumquat but it turned out to be pleasantly surprising. The fruit itself looks like a miniature mandarin orange. It is oval in shape. During September the kumquats reached their full size and began to ripen. It took about three months to fully ripen to a nice orange color. We decided this week that they were ripe enough to pick and eat. We picked one off the tree and pealed it like an orange. The kumquat tasted like a tart orange. It smells the same as an orange but has a bit more kick plus it has seeds.
