Erica currently attends the Pennsylvania College of Technology and is pursuing a degree in Architectural Technology and Building Science and Sustainable Design. She will working as an intern this summer, focusing on Estimating and Solar Energy, as well as learning to detail. She will start working with Drew and Nicole to learn the procedures and overall functionality of the Estimating Department, and will then be assisting with the development of Solar’s Renewable Energy and LEED teams.

Solar Innovations Inc. Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the many joys of summer.  It is one of the first things to look forward to each summer, producing fruit during 2-3 weeks in June.  You can buy strawberries year round but they never taste as good as the ones fresh from the farm.   People make jams, jellies, strawberry pie, strawberry shortcake and so many other foods.   Each year it seems that strawberries increase in price and this will probably continue to be the trend in the coming years.  One solution is to grow your own strawberries.   Most nurseries sell bunches of strawberries for around $5 and this includes about ten plants at least.   Strawberries are trailing plants and they have a tendency to take over your yard if not contained.  I was afraid of the lawn mower hitting the plants and so I decided to try growing the plants inside the greenhouse.  What is the oldest form of growing strawberries?  The strawberry pot.   I set out on a mission to find two large pots and was successful.  I discovered two ceramic strawberry pots that were blue and green.  I filled them with soil and began layering in the strawberries.   The plants are supposed to bear fruit the first year so we will ahve to see what happens with them.

Solar Innovations, Inc.'s Dutch Doors

With roots dating back to the 1600’s in the Netherlands, these doors have been designed for function; consisting of two panels, which open independently of each other. The door’s original purpose was to keep farm animals from wandering into farm homes, while maintaining air flow. By opening the top half of the door and leaving the bottom closed, home owners could go about their house work without intrusion. Dutch doors are now used in residential homes and commercial businesses for both interior and exterior applications.

Solar Innovations, Inc.’s Dutch Doors consist of two panels with aluminum framework and insulated glass. This frame will not rust, warp, rot, or require constant finish maintenance, like a wooden door. Insulated tempered glass used in the door enhances energy efficiency. Low-e, textured, and decorative glass are also available options, which can enhance the appearance of the door. Solar Innovations, Inc. offers seven standard frame finishes; custom colors are also available, at an additional cost.

Each panel can operate separately or in unison. Dutch doors allow home owners to enjoy ventilation without the entire door being left open. Pets and children can be contained, while enjoying the benefit of sunlight and fresh air throughout the home. Dutch doors are often incorporated into child care facilities and residential kitchens. Single terrace doors and double Dutch doors are custom designed to fit any opening, application and design requirement.

An all glass Dutch door consists of a glass infill in both panels. This configuration allows for maximum light exposure. A glass and base panel configuration includes a glass upper panel and a decorative raised base panel, allowing daylight through the door’s top portion with an impact resistant base panel. Solar Innovations, Inc. also offers historically accurate Dutch Doors, with solid infills for both the top and bottom panels.

Solar Innovations, Inc. Completes Folding Glass Walls in Katy, Texas

Solar Innovations, Inc. recently finished a folding glass wall project in Katy, Texas.  The project included two 8' tall folding glass wall systems painted in Solar's Natural Clay Duracron and equipped with 272 glass. The first unit was an all wall system consisting of four panels opening to the right.  The second was a wall system including a single door with a standard "Milan" swing door lever.This three panel system opens with all three panels opening to the left.  Both systems feature a two point lock system.  Opening away from each other allows the room to have wide openings on two sides of the room.  The project was an overall success.

Solar Innovations, Inc. designs, engineers, and manufactures solar canopies to custom specifications. Local building code, engineering requirements, and aesthetics are considered when designing solar canopies. Solar Innovations, Inc.’s solar powered canopies treat the solar panels as “glazing units” and are completely sealed within the canopy, to provide a watertight product. Gutter and lighting systems can also be integrated into the canopy structure for greater function.

Solar powered canopies can be designed to act as porch awnings, sunrooms, greenhouses, and parking lot canopies. The system uses a variety of solar panels, including Sanyo HIT panels and Schuco solar panels. It can be designed around panels that have been engineered into a previously existing system.

Solar Innovations Inc Soda Bottle Growing

The intent of gardening is to save money.  If you grow your own vegetables you do not need to buy fresh produce at the grocery store.  You will have quality control over all your vegetables and can can, freeze and dry foods for the winter months.  You will often find that the start up costs of gardening cost more than you anticipated.  You have to buy the pots, seeds, heat the containers and keep them watered.   One way to save a few dollars is to re-use drink bottles.   2 liter soda bottles work well, along with milk jugs and even yogurt cups for starting seeds.   I cut the top off of the bottles, poke drainage holes in the bottom and grow the plant directly in the bottle.  It saves money and is also a green product because you are not buying new pieces but are reducing landfill waste.
