Solar Innovations, Inc.'s Test Lab

Solar Innovations, Inc. has recently completed the installation of an in-house test lab,which will allow us to achieve many of our goals.  The space was designated over two years ago when the new building was laid out; our plan was to acquire and build a complete testing unit.  This past January, Solar was able to obtain a “test wall” which can handle units up to 10 feet x 16 feet.  Keeping with all of Solar’s green initiatives, including LEED, a water recycling system has been integrated.  All water used in the test lab comes from a cistern, which recycles all water from other uses.  

The test lab will better serve Solar.  Currently, the lab is testing products for air, water, and structural capabilities. To date, folding walls, terrace doors, and European window wall systems have all been tested. The lab is used weekly and will continue to enhance products, along with customers and employees.

Solar Innovations Vegetable Garden

Last month, Solar Innovations started a vegetable garden.  It was a little late to start, but it is growing well.  Solar started growing seeds back in February and raised the seedlings as they grew into plants.  The plants growth became stunted as they were ready for the outside, and I contained them in small pots until the garden was ready.  As soon as I got them outside, the vegetables took off again.  Due to space and water limitations, the Solar Innovations vegetable garden is located in a flower bed.   The ground was already prepared and it is located next to a spigot, making for easy watering.   The garden contains several varieties of tomatoes, lettuce, watermelon and cantaloupe.   There are peppers, squash, corn, potatoes, and even peanut plants.  Additionally, I planted gladiola bulbs and dahlias for late summer color.  The plan is to distribute the produce to the Solar employees and donate the rest to local charities.

Solar Innovations, Inc. Installs Danversbank's Stacking Glass Door System

Solar Innovations, Inc. recently installed a sliding /stacking wall system with one outswing door.  The door was outfitted with a Toronto swing door lever.  The four panel system allows all four panels to stack left.  This 11' by 11' interior application features a two point lock system with semi concealed hinges.  Because the panels will not be an exterior application, 1/4" monolithic clear tempered glazing was used.  The system secures the bank during closed hours, but also to allow easy access when the bank is open.  Solar has plans to create similar projects in the near future!

Solar Innovations Inc. Growing Oleanders

  Oleanders are typically shrubs, but Solar Innovations has an oleander tree.   Oleanders first came to the United States in the 1840's, native to the Mediterranean and parts of Asia.   The oleander is typically pink, but is also available in white, red and yellow.  The blooms are around 4" in diameter and can be a single or a double bloom, with a very sweet fragrance.  The typical oleander plant will bloom the entire summer.  Since it is native to the dry Mediterranean, the plant prefers sandy soil and is incredibly drought tolerant.  It is also well suited to bright intense full sun.  Propagating the tree is easy.  You simply take a cutting off a branch, below a leaf node, and plant in soil.  Within the month the plant will have taken and started to develop roots.  The plant is easy to grow and a great addition of color to any garden or indoor greenhouse.
