The orchids are starting to bloom in our greenhouse. This week Brassavola Little Stars opened and is displaying an exquisite bloom. She has been in our plant collection for about two years and this is the first time it has bloomed. This is a relatively easy orchid to grow. The plant features a unique leaf structure, featuring long skinny stems with pointed ends. This is a short orchid in height, not growing tall like a dendrobium but features a unique rhizome which mounds. When you think of an exotic looking orchid, the brassavola fits the criteria. Little Stars has four green petal blooms with a white center and green streaks. The bloom is around two inches long, looks very delicate and mimics the same pointed edges as its leaves. All of the brassavola family are appropriate for orchid growing beginners, requiring medium light and temperatures around seventy degrees. With regular fertilizing during active growth you should see blooms, which quickly multiply. Our plant has around ten blooms which are growing.
