Solar has a late bloomer in the greenhouse. Typically an amaryllis blooms in the middle of December, right in time for Christmas. This week an amaryllis bloomed in January, but better late than never. Her bloom is a stunning white with red streaks around five inches wide. Unlike the pink amaryllis which bloomed in December that had three blooms, this plant has only two. Only water was used to force the amaryllis into bloom. Most people grow amaryllises in soil, but this one was placed on gravel with water, and it spiked after roughly six weeks. To preserve the blooms the entire plant is kept in a cool room, which ranges in the 50’s and 60’s. When placed in warmer temperatures the blooms quickly fade.
