Our tropical greenhouse has a new bloomer: the red quill bromeliad. This is a simple plant with a uniquely shaped bloom that resembles a writing quill of days past. The bloom is most commonly pink or red and will further produce small yellow flowers at each intersection of the quill. Originally the bromeliad lived in a container in the greenhouse where it never bloomed. The greenhouse began to become too full so I moved it over to the pond greenhouse and planted her directly in the ground. With more space to grow, the plant expanded and about six months later we have a bloom. Inside the greenhouse the temperature rarely falls below seventy degrees during the day and at night stays around sixty to sixty-five degrees. The bromeliad is a tropical plant which requires ample water and daylight with warm temperatures.
