Pennsylvania recently had a small snowstorm. The area at our manufacturing plant received six inches of snow overnight. The roads were slippery, full of snow and ice. All of the greenhouses were covered in snow, but inside the plants were happy and warm. Heaters keep the greenhouses at temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees. All of Solar's greenhouses are engineered to withstand such snowstorms. The weight of snow and ice has the potential to collapse a greenhouse roof and so all greenhouses that go through our shop are engineered to withstand local snow loading. The snow will even act as an insulator for the heat inside the greenhouse. The added snow makes the greenhouses darker because light cannot penetrate the snow and lights are needed to work in the greenhouse while the snow melts. The overcast lighting also presents a challenge to seedlings which need the 12 hours or more of sunlight each day. When it snowed the grow lights were turned on for the entire day to add supplemental lighting to all of our young plants.
