During the winter there are not as many exciting things happening in the greenhouse compared to spring. I always use these months to experiment. Trying new ways of growing and working with different plant varieties keeps interest in the greenhouse. I recently read an article about growing a plant in soil, but out of a container, and it sounded like the perfect experiment for our greenhouse. I decided to use a succulent and started by removing the plant from the container. There was no sphagnum moss available at the greenhouse so I improvised with coconut husk. The root ball was wrapped in Spanish moss and then again in the coconut husk. I strung twine around the plant to secure the soil and shells. The plant now lives suspended in the air, attached to a plant hanger from a ring and collar. Watering is no different; I simply drench the plant with a hose, though you could dunk it in a bucket of water as well.
