February is the month of forced bulbs. The idea behind forcing a bulb is to gain a bloom before spring flowers in May. The hyacinth bulbs shown here were started back in October. Instead of forcing the bulbs in soil, I forced them into bloom with the use of water. Hyacinths are one of a few plant species which can bloom without soil. A clear glass vase is used and the bulb is held just above water. The humidity forces roots to grow followed by a stem on the bulb. It is February and we are enjoying the lovely scent of spring from the hyacinths. After the plant started to open, I moved it inside our office by a window. After the plant has bloomed the bulb is spent and should be discarded.
