A heliconia is in bloom here in Pine Grove. This is the first time for the plant to bloom. I initially bought the flower off of a clearance rack. When I got it back to the greenhouse I divided the plant into two new pieces. Shortly thereafter the plants started to die. Eventually there was nothing left in each container because all the foliage had died. I was hoping that it would grow again come spring so I let each container stay in the greenhouse and periodically watered it. Sure enough, in spring, leaves began to form and a year later we have a bloom on one plant. The second plant is much smaller but is still producing new leaves. Heliconias are large plant varieties which love light and water. Bright light is perfect for the plant and overwatering is not a common worry as the plant likes wet soil and does not like to dry out between watering.
