Solar Innovations Inc. Eave Vents

Eave vents are a wonderful addition to a greenhouse.  As everyone can imagine a greenhouse is in essence a glass box which overheats.  Ventilation is needed.  Ridge vents are installed in the roof to allow hot air to escape as it rises.  Solar recommends using eave vents in the walls of greenhouse.  Individual bays are grouped together with a motor and arm.  When the greenhouse becomes too hot the vents are automatically opened to bring in fresh air.  Instead of having to reach across benches filled with plants to reach the operator the flip of a switch brings in the air.  No plants are bumped or fall over with the use of an eave vent.

Solar Innovations Inc. Interior Garden

This summer our greenhouses are trying to grow vegetables inside the greenhouse as well as outside in the garden.  Our goal is to grow vegetables in container gardens.  Shown here is one of our early attempts.  We are growing watermelon, a pepper and tomato in one container.  As the plants get larger we may have to separate the plants but we are attempting this grouping so that there will be full foliage.  Fertilizing is key in the containers because the plants do not receive natural fertilizer from decaying matter. The plants are watered every other day and receive full sunlight.

Solar Innovations Inc Banana Trees

 

At Solar we enjoy growing bananas.  We have several live trees growing in our pond room.  The trees are partially submerged in a pond with koi fish which fertilize the trees.  We currently have two bunches of bananas growing.  From the time the tree blooms, it takes approximately 8-9 months for the bananas to ripen.  As the fruits become yellow, the tree begins to die.  In the photograph you will see the large banana tree is leaning and  is propped up with a cable.  When the fruit is fully ripened the tree is cut down and the next tree takes it place.

Solar Innovations Inc. grows peanuts

This year Solar is going to grow peanuts.  Everyone has heard and seen peanut prices drastically rise in grocery stores.  We decided to try and grow our own this year.  I sent for a pack of peanut seeds and within 10 days the plants have sprouted.  The peanuts are a fast growing seedling compared to many other plants.  In another month the last frost date will pass and the peanuts will be transplanted outside where we will hopefully have peanuts by the end of the summer.  We won't have enough for peanut butter but hopefully we can roast a handful or two for a snack.

Solar Innovations. Inc. Orchid Greenhouse

April will soon be wrapping up and the orchid greenhouse is still full of color.  The peak bloom season has passed but the phalaenoposis orchids continue to bloom and fill the greenhouse with pinks, purples and whites.  Now that the days have warmed in temperature, the greenhouse is also starting to heat up each day.  During April and into May little cooling is used, but rather the windows and ridge vents provide sufficient ventilation.  When the greenhouse overheats the ridge vents and eave sashes open, allowing hot air to escape and bring in fresh air.

Solar Innovations Inc. Passive Greenhouse Heat

Solar has recently started an experiment in the greenhouse.  Passive heating is a great option for a greenhouse.  Many people heat their structures with 55gal. drums of water, painted black.  Throughout the day the drums of water retain heat which is released at night.  Phase change panels have been added to the Solar greenhouse.  Each panel is equivalent to a 55gal. drum of water, but at a significantly smaller size.  The panels work the same way by retaining heat during the day and releasing it at night.  The benches are located in a rack and stay underneath a bench.  All totaled they take up much less space than drums of water, and more heat is able to be retained.

Solar Innovations Inc. English Cucumbers

Solar's greenhouse has started an English cucumber seed this year.  This cucumber variety is supposed to be well suited for growing in greenhouses as it requires no pollination.  The fruit will set by itself, without human aid or bees pollinating it.  An English cucumber is also said to have a more sweet taste as compared to regular cucumbers.  The breed is seedless and produces cucumbers that are skinnier than a traditional cucumber.

The orchid greenhouse has many colorful plants blooming at this time of year.  The greenhouse is almost in full bloom.  Many of the orchids grow on the gravel bench. This is a fixed bench which has a solid bench top with a lip. The top of the bench is filled with gravel and water.  This combination provides an excellent humidity source to the plants.  As the water evaporates it surrounds the orchids which require high humidity levels.  This bench is filled with water once or twice a week and the orchids love it.

This is a vingnette photograph of our greenhouse from up high.  Last week I had to hang a trellis and I noticed how different the greenhouse looks from six feet in the air.   The view from the ladder shows a lot of color and the greenhouse looks very much alive.

Solar Innovations Inc. Raised Greenhouse Bed

The raised bed has returned to the greenhouse.  This past summer we converted the raised bed into a fixed bench for heavy plants.  After several months we decided to bring back the raised bed.  Half of the fixed bench was converted and the raised bed has returned.  The plastic mesh base stayed and a piece of foam was fitted atop the mesh, with potting soil filling in the remaining areas.  A trellis from the pond greenhouse was brought into this greenhouse.  The raised bed has two geraniums, lettuce, peppers and canteloupe.  The intent is to grow the canteloupe plants up the trellis.
