When I started the upside down tomatoes about two months ago I waited for a week or two to see how they would fare. After it became clear that the tomatoes would continue to live, I decided to grow a cucumber in the same fashion. I used the same routine as the tomatoes where I drilled holes in the bottom of the bucket , filled with potting soil, and then pushed the cucumber in through the bottom. Unlike the tomatoes, the cucumber was a slow grower. I also planted cucumbers in the ground and they grew like wild fire. It seemed that the upside down cucumbers were not growing, they were stagnant. Then I started to fertilize them and in the past two weeks they have grown by about 18 inches. I still do not have any fruit but the vine is health and growing. I am sure it will start producing very shortly.
